THE ARMOR PROJECT
Time Frame: Summer '93 - Spring '94
This chainmail has improved my Armor Class by -4. Though it weighs about 25 lbs, I suffer no penalties to any rolls or activities involving Dexterity (including Magic Use), since it wraps closely to the torso and doesn't impede movement in any way. I can still use the Move Silently ability because I've woven leather straps in between each link -- it's completely soundless. (And the leather weave bestows the extra AC bonus of -1.)
What's that?... No, I certainly do NOT think that I play Dungeons and Dragons too much. Why do you ask?
This is about 100 feet of 16 gauge steel wire. I cut each link individually, wove them together, wove the leather straps into it, and sewed the whole thing onto a leather vest. The fur collar is made from -- get this -- genuine Egyptian Black Monkey fur. (A friend gave me this fur coat that she hadn't worn in years. I dislike fur as a general rule, but you just don't turn down something like that.)
Furthermore, the experience points gained in the creation of this piece has added to my "Armorer", "Metalworking" and "Sewing" Non-Weapon Proficiencies bonuses.
